Brian Montshiwa
Born and raised in Ivory Park, Johannesburg Interdisciplinary artist who is known for their expansive drawing practice that depends on the cross-fertilisation between mediums – through performance art, video art, text paintings, printmaking, installation and drawing – which engages materiality and memory. Montshiwa holds an Honours Degree in Bachelors of Arts in fine Arts from the University of Witwatersrand. Their process looks into gesture, repetitive labor, affect and performativity to redress invisibility and to seek more nuanced grammar for presenting overlooked and erased narratives, including their own. They use unlinked metaphors to introduce a fluidity in how histories are disseminated. Montshiwa has exhibited and presented performances at several notable institutions, including the University of the Witwatersrand.
