Bio
Kimberly Isibusiso Mduli is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose creative roots trace back to Whittlesea, Eastern Cape. Growing up surrounded by strong women, especially her mother and grandmother, Kimberly’s art reflects a deep connection to her heritage and the creative spirit nurtured in her youth. Her grandmother, Olive, born in the 1930’s, is known for her remarkable skill in sewing and designing patterns from imagination—qualities that have inspired Kimberly’s own inventive approach.
Kimberly works in mixed media, photography, collage, and acrylics. Her love for photography was sparked by her uncle’s passion for film cameras, a unique influence that adds depth to her visual storytelling. Her practice, infused with emotions and exploration is deeply inspired by them.
Her art aims to evoke strong emotions and provoke thought, whether positive or unsettling. Kimberly’s pieces often resonate with viewers, inspiring them to create. Her creative process involves waves of inspiration, sudden ideas, and deep emotional connections, fueled by music that aligns with her vision.
Notable achievements include her participation in two online exhibitions and the creation of striking covers for various artists. Her ongoing work highlights Johannesburg’s townships and CBD, showcasing the beauty within the grit of everyday life. Her series KwaNyam’ayipheli: emini maqanda and “Forever ago” further reflect her thematic focus on home, identity, and the things most cherished.
Kimberly continues to push creative boundaries, honouring her lineage while developing a unique voice that is both fun and surreal.
