Louise van der Bijl
LOUISE VAN DER BIJL (1984 -) Louise van der Bijl’s paintings depict her fascination with Johannesburg and her, often overwhelming, experiences of the city. The process of settling in Johannesburg has become fundamental to her art practice. Using snapshot photographs, maps, newspaper articles and websites as references, she creates paintings that document her city journeys and viewpoints, its people and its overlooked objects. “My paintings tell a story of my experience in the city and of my experience of life” van der Bijl was born in Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal but now lives and works in Johannesburg. She graduated with a BA Fine Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2007. van der Bijl co-founded the arts community platform Assemblage, which facilitated knowledge sharing and networking between artists in Johannesburg. She has taken part in numerous group exhibitions, her first solo exhibition, Memory Game, was held at the Ithuba Arts Gallery in 2014.
