Maria Caley
Maria Caley (b. 1982, Rundu, Kavango, north eastern Namibia) was exposed to traditional forms of making indigenous art during her childhood, such as basketry, which has remained part of her unique design identity and inspiration. Caley is a lecturer at the University of Namibia in the department of Humanities and Art. She specializes in textiles and fashion design, and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Textiles and Fashion Studies), and a Masters degree (Visual Arts) from the University of Namibia. Her textile work is informed by Kavango traditional baskets, extracting natural dyes, and creating motifs based on the patterns worked into the baskets, and other indigenous crafts. Caley has exhibited and showcased her work in numerous local and international shows.
