Miró van der Vloed
Born in Pretoria in 1998, Miró has spent time between Durban, Pretoria, Cape Town and the Free State. In 2020, they completed a BaFa (with distinction) from Michaelis school of Fine Arts (University of Cape Town) with a focus on printmaking and sculpture. In February of 2021 he participated in the art for global regeneration auction that raised funds for climate parks in south Africa and the United States. They participated in a group show entitled Resite at the Johann van Heerden Gallery in June. In August Miró participated in Thread(ed), a group exhibition held at the association of arts Pretoria. In November he won a merit award for work entered in the New Breed Art Competition. In January of 2022 they took part in Somewhere Over The Rainbow, an exhibition run through the Teresa Lizamore gallery. An LGBTQIA+ group show that celebrated queer people in Africa. They were part of the Free State Art Collective in 2022 through which they took part in Equilibrium, a group show hosted at ark.contemporary in Rosendal. Miró is currently a first year MFA candidate at the University of Cape Town. Van der Vloed explores the dynamics of homemaking and the intersections between his queerness and memories of exclusion and validation as a child. His focus on ceramics stems from his nostalgic connection to the medium, as his mother is a ceramicist. Clay has become a means in which to process their lived experiences and a way in which to navigate the world around them.
