Mzamo Mlambo

Mzamo Mlambo
Mzamo Mlambo is a South African artist born on the 4th of September 1990, on a small mission called Osindisweni, north of Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal. He formed an attachment to visual arts in primary school where he used to draw with sticks on the ground. He has fond memories of his granny covering his illustrations when it rained to preserve his work. Artist Statement Mlambo’s work is about maximising the inner self and creating utopian spaces that are innovative, uncompromising, and, romantic to uphold the power of emotion. And the touch of the human hand. These are all elements that describe the urban lifestyle. In his childhood, Mlambo used to like playing the classic video game, Tetris. The game almost always has the same mechanics: different-shaped blocks descend, and the player must rotate and arrange them to create an uninterrupted horizontal row on the screen. The completed rows disappear when the player forms one or more solid rows. The goal of the game is to prevent the blocks from stacking up to the top of the screen for as long as possible. For him, the blocks represent our daily life; we need to balance work and play. In this regard, he follows his own instincts. The game inspires his work, and he uses 3D forms and bold colours to express movement through the modern world. It is about celebrating everything we have achieved as humankind while recognising the inequalities that arise in rebuilding.
