Patrick Bongoy

Patrick Bongoy
Through his art, Patrick Bongoy, takes a closer look at the survival mechanisms that human beings utilise amidst social and industrial problems, specifically the devastation prevalent in his war-ravaged hometown, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The societal change and deprivation he has witnessed are his primary inspiration. He believes that art can comfort and offer an alternative reality. He uses unconventional materials like jute, stitching, and tar and through the recovery of waste materials such as inner tyre tubes, industrial packaging and textiles, he repurposes and reinterprets what others discard. Although originally from the DRC, Bongoy now lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Kinshasa in 2009 and completed a residency at SADI Collective Space Crossroads in Kinshasa in 2012. Artworks by Bongoy were showed at the Art Africa Fair (2017), Ebony/Curated, and included in the group exhibition, What is the Matter (2017), Ebony/Curated. He has had held two solo exhibitions, the most recent being, Where are we? Where are we going?, held at Ebony/Curated in Cape Town (2017).
