Rushda Deaney was born in 1988 in Cape Town. Deaney graduated in 2011 with a National Diploma in Surface Design at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. In 2018, Deaney graduated with a BA in Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University. In 2022, Deaney graduated with Masters in Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University. Artist Statement: Deaney’s work investigates her personal experiences as a Muslim women and questions how she expresses the complexities of her Muslim identity while celebrating her faith. Her work explores the personal narrative of her Muslim identity and is inspired by ritual objects in her home. Labour intensive techniques such as combining crochet with frame weaving, crochet, cross stitching, embroidery and unravelling initiates a meditative state that allows her to investigate and explore the multi-layered, conflicting and often restricting complexities of being a Muslim woman. Through methods of unravelling, reattaching, embroidery and crocheting, her artwork aims to make visible her own disentangling journey of making sense of her identity.
