Saaiqa

Saaiqa
Saaiqa is an interdisciplinary artist, writer and visual storyteller based in Durban. Saaiqa’s work is often rooted in explorations about mental illness, the power of the mind and the psychological landscape we traverse as we experience life, sociopolitical dynamics, identity and our species’ relationship and place within the natural world; with works predominantly taking form as photography, installation and mixed media. Both Past and Present, in Youth and Old Age and Black and White. Companions find themselves here. On the pavement, leaning against the barrier wall of a suburban home, sat two Companions, their bodies and postures mirroring each other - knees raised to their chests, arms folded, their gazes fixed on the horizon. These works are reflections on the salience of race relations in South Africa, colonial legacy, the diamond mines of the Northern Cape, and the monopoly of the natural world.
