Sarah Judge
Sarah graduated from Wits with a BA in Fine Arts (2018), where great mentors/lecturers pushed her printmaking beyond her limits. Following this, she completed an internship at the David Kurt Workshop where she currently works full time, as well as in the gallery at weekends.
Her artmaking process occurs as she explores the city of Johannesburg with a conscious awareness, engaging with its buildings, their power relations and environs, discovering unfamiliar spaces alongside her daily travelled places. Sarah says: “My positionality as a White South African female plays a role in my interrogation process as I question the present and the past, acknowledge it and use it to move forward in my perception of my spaces.” Her intention is to question that which confronts her through a visual language that is both effective and understandable within many contexts.
Sarah challenges herself in print, whether it be the size or the amount of detail in the carving, not limiting herself to a specific way of working. Working on different scales with different print techniques in mainly black and white or monochrome, she enjoys linocut the most.
