Sbonelo Luthuli is a South African ceramicist who studied Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology. He is inspired by ceramicists : Nesta Nala, Clive Sithole, and Ian Garret. Luthuli’s personal experiences shape the narrative of his work. His ceramic vessels, known as ‘izinkamba’ , are described as “spiritual and meditative." Luthuli explains “My depiction draws its content from religious, political, traditional practices, heritage, customs and aspects of the dynamics of life in general." He introduces contemporary aesthetics into his ceramics, and his work is said to challenge, question, and comment on rules and laws that serve as guidelines when creating ceramic vessels. Luthuli has achieved numerous awards for his ceramic vessels and has exhibited in many galleries around South Africa.
