Sometimes surviving day to day is the dream and that is alright. We can all learn a lot from those who understand the weight of this truth. I am a Soweto born artist who documents the lived experiences of ordinary people in my community of Soweto and the Johannesburg inner-city. As a street photographer, I use digital photography to reflect the vibrancy, hustle, and beauty in the everyday life of my subjects. We can easily miss the beauty in these gritty spaces, but my photography celebrates and accentuates this. Over and above reflecting the aesthetic value, my art pays homage to the fighting spirit which is innate in the communities I photograph.
My work has earned accolades such as being the 2019 Canon Roadshow winner in the Local Travel category and the Standard Bank Gallery-Photography in Our Mother Tongue competition winner in 2021. In August 2022, I showcased my work in a group exhibition titled ‘A Safe Space’ which I hosted with two other artists at Ellis House Art Building.
This year, I also got to exhibit my work during the Thami Mnyele exhibition for shortlisted artists in Ekurhuleni. I am currently working with HSRC as an artist who has been selected to exhibit in their upcoming Youth Livelihoods Virtual Museum. Another exhibition that I have been selected to showcase my work in, is the prestigious Turbine Art Fair (TAF) Paper Exhibition 2023.
