Alice Smeets

Alice Smeets

Alice Smeets (1978) is a multi-disciplinary Belgium artist and documentary photographer known for per profound engagement with Haiti. After studying photography in Liége, she embarked on her first trip to the country, where she began her career assisting the renowned Magnum Photos photographer, Phillip Jones Griffiths.

Smeets gained significant international acclaim in 2008 when she received the UNICEF Photo of the Year Award for an image from her powerful series, "Growing up in Haiti". This recognition was followed by her first major solo exhibition in 2009 at the Ludwig Forum for International art in Aachen, Germany, cementing her role as a traveling documentary photographer.

Inspired by the creativity and resilience of the Haitian people, Smeets initiated her celebrated photographic project, the Ghetto Tarot. In collaboration with the Haitian artist collective Atis Rezistans, she created a new artistic interpretation of the traditional Rider-Waite tarot deck, staging the scenes within the vibrant context of a Port-au-Prince ghetto. This project exemplifies her unique approach of blending documentary practice with conceptual art and collaboration.
