Nicki Friedlein

Nicki Friedlein is a textile and thread artist who has worked with fabric and thread for as long as she can remember. Growing up in a family of makers, she was surrounded by sewing, lace-making, knitting, and crocheting—skills passed down from her mother and grandmothers. Embroidery became her own creative expression, and she inherited a deep appreciation for the meditative process of making and the versatility of woven and spun materials.
After completing a foundation year in fine art and design, she chose to specialize in fashion and textiles, earning a BA (Hons) from Kingston University in London. This led to a fulfilling creative career that spanned both Europe and Asia.
Her artwork has since evolved from this experience. She creates portraits and landscapes from previously loved denim clothing—a fabric known for its durability and universal presence across cultures. Using her own photographs as a foundation, she experiments with positive and negative imagery, translating digital captures into tactile, analogue forms.
Her abstract works incorporate "knips," the small thread offcuts she diligently saves from sewing and embroidery projects, creating a connection between each piece. More recently, she has been exploring the sculptural possibilities of thread.
Each artwork is stitched by hand and on the same trusted sewing machine she has used since she was 18 years old.
