Andrew Ntshabele (b. 1986) is a Johannesburg-based artist whose work serves as a powerful social commentary on the contemporary urban experience in South Africa. Living and working in the inner city, Ntshabele's art is a direct reflection of his environment, capturing the daily realities of its residents amidst the pressures of rapid urbanisation and its consequences.
Originally from the rural town of Moruleng in the North West Province, Ntshabele moved to Johannesburg at the age of four and has since witnessed the city's profound physical, socio-economic, and political transformations in the post-Apartheid era. He holds a BTech degree in painting from the University of Johannesburg (2013). This academic grounding, combined with his lived experience, informs his investigation into the root causes of urban decay and the challenges faced by its inhabitants.
Ntshabele’s distinct mixed-media technique—a fusion of collage and acrylic paint—mirrors the layered and complex environment he depicts. Using photographs taken during his travels around the city as a starting point, his work often focuses on the pervasive issues of pollution and poverty. Through his art, he explores the socio-economic predicament of many Black South Africans, offering a poignant and critical look at the promises and challenges of life in a post-colonial metropolis.
