Andrew Tshabangu

Andrew Tshabangu

Andrew Tshabangu (b. 1966, Dube, Soweto) is one of South Africa's most significant contemporary photographers, renowned for his evocative black-and-white images that explore themes of spirituality, community, and everyday life in post-Apartheid South Africa. His work occupies a unique space between social documentary and a quieter, more poetic mode of seeing, capturing the rhythms and realities of urban and rural existence.

For decades, Tshabangu has focused his lens on the intimate rituals and transient moments that define the human experience, particularly within Black communities. His subjects often include Zion Christian Church (ZCC) worshippers, the vibrant street life of Johannesburg, and the quiet dignity of individuals navigating their environments. Through his masterful use of light and shadow, he creates images that are both timeless and deeply rooted in a specific social context.

His significant contribution to South African photography was celebrated in the large-scale retrospective exhibition, "Footprints," held at the Standard Bank Gallery in 2017. The critically acclaimed show, which surveyed over two decades of his work, was accompanied by a major book publication, solidifying his status as a pivotal figure in the nation's photographic canon. Tshabangu continues to live and work in Johannesburg, documenting the ever-shifting spiritual and social landscapes of his country.
