Andrew Verster (1937 – 2020) was one of South Africa's most versatile and celebrated artists, known for his vibrant and sensuous explorations of colour, form, and pattern across a remarkable range of media. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he established himself as a masterful painter, drawer, printmaker, textile and set designer, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape, particularly in his adopted home of Durban.
Educated in the United Kingdom, Verster obtained a National Diploma in Design from the Camberwell College of Art (1959) and an Art Teacher’s Diploma from Reading University (1960). He returned to South Africa and became an influential Fine Arts lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Durban University of Technology. In 1976, he committed himself to being a full-time artist, a move that heralded an intensely productive period of creation and exhibition.
Verster's work often celebrates the human figure, mythology, and the lush, subtropical environment of Durban. He was renowned for his fluid use of line and a bold, often joyous, colour palette. His practice extended beyond the canvas to include acclaimed set and costume designs for theatre and opera, as well as large-scale public commissions.
In recognition of his immense contribution to the arts, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) awarded Verster with an honorary doctorate in 2009. His work is held in major public and private collections across South Africa and internationally, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure in South African contemporary art.
