Gretchen van der Byl

Gretchen van der Byl trained as a painter at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, where she now teaches painting and drawing part-time. Her practice is largely figurative, focusing on covert violence—both in disguised forms unfolding before us and implied through ambiguous spaces. Additionally, she has a formal interest in the tension between the concept of painting-as-window and insistence on surface.
