Gretchen van der Byl
Gretchen van der Byl trained as a painter at the Michaelis School of Fine Art where she teaches part-time in painting and drawing. Her practice is largely figurative and concerned with covert violence, both unfolding before us in disguised form, or implied through the articulation of ambiguous spaces. She also has a formal interest in the tension between the notion of painting-as-window and the countering insistence of surface.
