In my artistic practice, I seek to form deep connections with special places. This series, inspired by 40 days of morning walks in the Orangekloof nature reserve on Table Mountain, captures the experience of an indigenous forest with its rivers and surrounding mountains. Each painting reflects not only the visual beauty of these moments but also their emotional resonance.
Crafted with natural soot ink on 100% cotton paper, the process is as meaningful as the subject. Soot ink, made from burnt plant oil and transformed into a solid ink block, is freshly ground with water before each painting session. This material demands presence and immediacy, allowing the ink, water, and gravity to collaborate in creating the final image.
These paintings are meditative reflections on nature and our relationship with it. Owning one is to bring the tranquility and energy of Orangekloof into your space.
