Nicola Holgate
Nicola Holgate is a contemporary figurative painter and a sculptor. Her current practice is focused on medium and process. Nicola relocated to South Africa in 2016 after living in Botswana for 16 years. She spent three years in residencies at Greatmore Studios in Cape town in 2018, August House in Johannesburg in 2019 and 2020, and currently practices from her home studio in Hartbeespoort in the North West Province.
She participated in the RMB Talent Unlocked 2021 program, culminating in a group show at Everard Read
Circa Gallery, followed by an online Auction of the works made during the program with Strauss and Co.
Nicola also placed in the top 20 of the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards in September 2021.
In her words, “I tell stories as both a painter and a sculptor, currently working with paper as the common element in both forms. Paper has a versatility that allows for wide expression, whether it's a full body paper clay or a delicate hand made sheet. This medium, in all its textures and grain, makes the descriptions possible that telling a good story requires. My recent work has focused on exploring metaphors to describe a state of mind or mood, seeking to spark recognition and extend an invitation to dream into the story the work is telling the viewer.”
