Phumzile Buthelezi
Phumzile Buthelezi (b. 1976) is a fine artist that graduated at Artist Proof Studio with print making. She always had an affinity with art, starting from an age as young as 13 years old where she won third prize in a drawing competition. She has always been crafty and was mostly occupied with embroidery, crocheting, knitting, bead-work and fabric painting in her teenage years. Her style is easily distinguishable, with organic forms and shapes and a colourful palette. Her work extends the qualities of nature; as beautiful, life-giving, and a formidable force which also examples female energy of strength, beauty and nurturing qualities – exhibiting the feminine not as an idolization and mystical far-fetched concept but as a real force that shapes us and our and understanding of the world and ourselves related to the world. The works are templates of wisdom, that offer a reflection with the maternal relationships in our lives.
She is currently working on multiple projects, including a sculpture/illustration exhibition with Candice Berman and exhibited work in the 2020 Turbine Art Fair amongst many others. Her most recent exhibition is Ambiguous with MMArthouse which opened on the 15th of August 2020.
