THARIEN SMITH (1973 - ) Tharien Smith was born in the Free State, schooled in Johannesburg and studied and lived in Pretoria for the past 23 years. She graduated with a National Textile Diploma from Tshwane University of Pretoria (1995) and has spent most of her career working in various different creative, corporate environments designing anything from furnishing fabrics/fashion, graphics and ceramic tiles. She has recently moved to Cape Town, South Africa, in order to focus more on her art and design work. Tharien’s first solo exhibition Indians vs Nature (2007) was held at the Gallery on the Corner, Johannesburg, and most recently she took part in the Flow Group Art Exhibition (2016), 196 Victoria Road, Cape Town. Fascinated with nature, archeology, human anatomy, perspective and chiaroscuro, Tharien loves to experiment and explore new techniques. She lives by the words of Ronny Garcia Moton, which she freely interprets: '' Living life changed the perspective I had about life and also showed me that I can create whatever I wanted without limits, that I could make my own worlds and that I was the owner of my own story and that I was allowed to create them as I imagined them.”
