TJ Lemon

TJ Lemon is a significant figure in the history of South African photography, recognized for his contributions as a photographer, educator, and institutional director during the pivotal years of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

His career began in the 1980s as a student photographer in the university town of Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown). He quickly established himself in the local scene with three exhibitions and held a position as a lecturer in Photojournalism at Rhodes University from 1988 to 1989.

In 1990, Lemon moved to Johannesburg and took on a formative leadership role as the director and trainer at the newly established Market Photo Workshop. His work there was instrumental in shaping one of the country's most important institutions for photographic education, renowned for developing new generations of South African photographers.

During this period, Lemon was also an active contributor to Afrapix, the influential photographic collective known for its critical documentation of South Africa during the final years of apartheid. This dual role as an institutional builder and an engaged photographer cemented his legacy within the national photographic community.
