Tracey Rose

Tracey Rose

Tracey Rose is one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary artists, renowned for her radical performance, video, and photographic work. Based in Johannesburg, her practice is a bold and unflinching confrontation with the politics of identity.

At the core of her work is a critical response to the limitations of dogma and institutionalised cultural discourse. Rose relentlessly interrogates themes of race, gender, and sexuality, often using her own body as a site for protest, parody, and radical self-expression. While performance is central to her practice, it extends into photography and video installations. Her potent artistic language often references art historical precedents, with critic Jan Avgikos noting that "part of Rose's appeal is her fluid referencing of '60s and '70s performance art."

Rose holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand (1996) and has taught at several South African institutions. A pivotal moment in her career came in 2001 when, as artist-in-residence at the South African National Gallery, she developed work for the prestigious Venice Biennale, curated by the legendary Harald Szeemann.
