Ugo Woatzi

Ugo Woatzi

Ugo Woatzi (b. 1991) is a queer visual artist based in Brussels whose work navigates the spaces between the real and the imagined, freedom and restriction. His background is uniquely interdisciplinary, with a BA Sociology from Toulouse and Galatasaray (2013). His connection to the South African art scene was solidified in 2016 when he completed the Intermediate Course at the renowned Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg.

Woatzi’s art functions as a form of camouflage and adaptation, much like a chameleon blending into its surroundings as a means of survival and self-preservation. Through a deeply collaborative process, he channels the desires and struggles of his community. Together, they work to create a more sensitive and accepting world, simultaneously escaping and confronting the harsh realities of divisive heteronormative structures.

His acclaimed series "chameleon" has been featured in multiple publications and has won several international awards. Since 2019, Woatzi has been developing his work under the mentorship of the South Africa-based Through The Lens Collective. In 2021, he was selected to join FUTURES, a prominent Europe-based photography platform that supports emerging talent.
