Velile Soha is a Cape Town-born artist whose work serves as a realistic and vital document of South African life. His formal training took place at the acclaimed Rorke's Drift Art School in KwaZulu-Natal from 1981 to 1983. Following his studies, he became deeply involved in community arts, working and lecturing at both the Nyanga Art Centre and the Community Art Project in Cape Town.
As a full-time artist, Velile has built an extensive international career, with his work featuring in solo and group exhibitions across South Africa, Namibia, Germany, the USA, England, and many other countries. His artistic mission is clear and focused. In his own words, “I am a realistic artist. I express myself mostly through black location and homeland scenes. My aim is to show outside communities how my own people live their lives.”
This dedication to depicting the everyday realities of his community with honesty and clarity remains the cornerstone of his impactful practice.
