Zanoxolo Sylvester Mqeku (b. 1987) is a South African artist celebrated for his innovative development of sand cast ceramics. Born in Mount Fletcher in the Eastern Cape, his creative journey began with foundational studies in art and architecture at Nelson Mandela University before he committed to fine art, graduating with a diploma in Ceramic Design in 2013.
After a formative period working at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein, Mqeku's academic curiosity led him to the Tshwane University of Technology. There, he earned a B-Tech in Fine Art, where his research into African Philosophy and research methods laid the groundwork for his pioneering investigations into sand cast ceramics.
Mqeku's quest to develop this unique studio practice gained significant momentum in 2018 when he was commissioned by the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. This led to the first-ever public workshop on his technique and further master's-level research into its application in public creative practice and fabrication technologies.
His distinct approach has garnered international acclaim, leading to a series of prestigious artist residencies, including Vallauris in the South of France (2019) and the inaugural class of the Black Rock Senegal Artist Residence in Dakar (2020). In 2021, he was invited to the Faenza Art Ceramic Centre in Italy to create a new body of work for exhibition at the renowned International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza. Through his art and teaching, Mqeku continues to explore and expand the boundaries of contemporary African ceramic practice.
