Bhele Gallery

Bhele Gallery is a multidisciplinary curator and independent researcher specializing in contemporary African art and archival studies. He holds a diploma in Fine Art from Nelson Mandela University in South Africa, where he founded the MAD (Music Art Design) School Society during his studies. In 2010, he established "The Basement Project", an artists' collective that facilitated independent curatorial work and workshops in alternative spaces and public institutions, including Alliance Française, Nelson Mandela Metro Museum, Nelson Mandela University, The Irie, and New York Cup.

In 2013, after three years of curating and workshop facilitation, Bhele was invited by Independent Curators International (ICI) in New York to explore curating within an African context. Following his exhibition,

This effort lead to the development of the Curatorial Heritage Interpretation Program (CHIP), which digitizes oral traditions into archives.

In 2019, Bhele curated the first CHIP exhibition in Johannesburg, showcasing his research on creating and presenting Contemporary African Archives. This exhibition featured collaborations with a shaman from the Eastern Cape, a London-based contemporary dancer, a Soweto-based ethnomusicologist with over 20 years of experience, and Bhele himself as curator and visual artist.

Since then, Bhele has continued to introduce CHIP to established artists and institutions. Between December 2021 and May 2022, he curated a solo exhibition titled Contemporary African Archives at Keyes Art Mile Gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg, featuring over 50 artworks.

With 15 years of experience as an art practitioner, Bhele Gallery continues to push the boundaries of curatorial practice in African contemporary art.
