The source material for the painting is an old black and white postcard of Johannesburg by an unnamed photographer. The photogrpah has been cropped so that the painting enhances the fall of light from left to right, shadow enveloping and obscuring structural details. The words His Majesty's faintly appear on one of the buildings, giving an indication of the exact location. The painting technique, in its blurriness and emphasis on light rather than detail, arguably captures the city as it was projected then, in black and white postcards; a moment in time 'made visible' by its appearance in oil on canvas.
