Nhlengethwa notes: The theme, Art meets Fashion, is born out of the golden thread of art that permeates the fashion world. I believe that clothing designs and other fashion accessories are inspired by art - whether in colour or style.
My interest in this dates back to my teens. I have always been fascinated by people looking trendy. I love shopping around for exclusive pieces of clothing for myself and my family.
In this series, I reflected on models in dressing rooms and on the ramp. I always like to see women with Afro hairstyles, head scarves, berets and hats.
Afro I is a portrait of Nhlengethwa's youngest daughter (she is a nuclear engineer). For the print Afro II, Nhlengethwa collaged bits of text from a vintage hair-care advert found in a 1960s Ebony Magazine. In this series, the artist references his celebration of race, gender and class in Black African women's notions of their hair and styling and how they assert their identity and choice of crowns.
