Dathini Mzayiya
Born in 1979, Mzayiya currently holds a studio space at The Fugitive Art Studios at the New Centre, Selby, Johannesburg. Former artist in residency and a National Research Foundation (NRF) fellow at Factory of the Arts (FOA), a project of the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at University of Western Cape (UWC), an artist in residence and board member at Greatmore Artist Studios in Cape Town and Bag Factory in Newtown, Johannesburg. Dathini Mzayiya enrolled at the Community Arts Project (CAP) in Woodstock, Cape Town 2001, where he studied Advanced Programme in Visual Art. Since then, he has been an artist in residencies and exhibited his work nationally and internationally, notably at Art Besel Miami Fair, United States of America, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Netherlands, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Uganda and Tanzania. In his work, Mzayiya employs mixed mediums ranging from painting, charcoal drawing, animation, sound, video installation, interdisciplinary collaborations and performances. Mzayiya is a founding member of various art organisations and institutions including Factory of the Arts, a Flagship project of the Centre for Humanities Research at University of Western Cape (UWC); Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA); Africa South Arts Initiative (ASAI), City Skin, a public art and public space design firm and Gugulective Artist Collective.
