Jo Voysey

Jo Voysey
Jo Voysey explores medicine as a medium for painting. The chemical makeup of the medicine (mostly over-the-counter, self-medicating pharmaceutical products and tinctures) cause material effects that are visceral, raw, unpredictable and unstable, allowing the medium to have a voice of its own. Affected by her disappointment in humanity and the current global circumstances, her paintings draw attention to a sense of loss and a longing for healing. Voysey was born in Johannesburg, and currently lives and works in Cape Town. She obtained a BA Fine Arts Degree from the University of Witwatersrand (2010) and completed her MA Fine Art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art - University of Cape Town (2013). She works as a Fine Art Lecturer at the Durban University of Technology. Voysey has participated in a number of group exhibitions of which the most recent which she also curated, was Know this Place? at the KZNSA Gallery, Durban, in 2019. Her most recent solo exhibition, concluding her time as an artist in residence, was Never Trust a Balancing Rock, National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Bulawayo (2019).
