Percy Maimela

Percy Maimela
Percy Maimela (b.1985) lives and works in Johannesburg and is a self-taught artist who works mainly in charcoal drawing and painting. His work, socially conscious and situated in the current social environment and its issues, seek to remind us that we hold the power to incite change. The mask motif along with the fingerprint pattern often used refers to the information stored in our DNA and external influences inherited from our history even before we were created. It invites us to reflect on our cultural legacies and consider the responsibility we have to respect this and to make an effort to improve who we are. In 2019 Maimela received the Honorouble Mention Award at the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards and also became the Guinness world record holder for the biggest coffee mosaic ever made.
