Hanien Conradie
Hanien Conradie is a South African earth artist whose work combines painting, ritualistic performance, and natural pigments to explore human-nature relationships and the theme of belonging. With a Master of Fine Art (2015) from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (University of Cape Town), Conradie’s practice is informed by ecological thinkers like Arne Naess and Joanna Macy, as well as artists such as Richard Long, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Marina Abramovic.
Â
Conradie’s art is inspired by places such as Table Mountain National Park, the Tankwa Karoo, and sacred sites of Botswana. Her projects include landscape paintings in natural pigments, meditative ink studies and installations with organic materials, all of which capture her evolving relationship with each place she encounters. Driven by a desire to address humanity’s alienation from nature, Conradie’s work expresses her deepening connection to each environment.
Â
Conradie’s work has been widely exhibited across Southern Africa, Europe, and the USA. Notable solo exhibitions include Ntlhantle: In the Direction of Beauty  (Linnaeus Gallery, Gaborone 2018), Raaswater(Everard Read Gallery, Cape Town 2019) and Spoorloos (Everard Read Gallery in Cape Town 2021). She has also contributed to various ecological group shows, including Earth Power! (2022) in Brussels and the 1-54 London Contemporary African Art Fair.
Â
An active voice in ecological discourse, Conradie frequently participates in interdisciplinary symposiums and artist residencies focused on environmental themes. Through her art, she not only expresses her own reconnection with nature but invites others to reflect on their own relationship with the natural world.
