Part of my body of work titled re-, Tethering was inspired by Marie-Lorraine Kalassa's relationship with her mother. Rooted in the complexities of Kalassa trying to locate herself within her inherited history. The ink used to dye the thread is made from avocado seeds. A seed references the beginning or source of something which in this case Kalassa link to her mother and country of origin. This is further supplemented by the discovery of avocado trees present in the yard of Kalassa's mother's childhood home in Kinshasa. The organic material and media speaks to the idea of the intangible and difficulty of tethering these present and historical connections through remembrance.
