This photography and mixed-media work draws from Phendulwa's research into underrepresented South African histories, tracing back to her Hlubi roots—one of South Africa’s oldest tribes. It explores the dual cultural aspects of being a Xhosa-speaking Hlubi, highlighting the location of the Hlubi nation in Southern Africa as far back as the 13th century. Initially situated in the KwaZulu-Natal region, the Hlubi later migrated to parts of Swaziland, Lesotho, and the Transkei, while some members remained in KZN following the Mfecane wars.
The colour palette is also deeply symbolic. In Xhosa culture, green represents growth, vitality, and the bountiful resources of the land. It signifies expansion (ukukhula) and reflects the deep connection our ancestors had with nature. Whilst the pyramids represent the connection between earth and higher spiritual realms.
