David 'Daut' Makala
David "Daut" Makala is an artist born in Lusaka, Zambia and the founder of Studio225 in Chilenje Market. Under the mentorship of Stary Mwaba, he completed an apprenticeship at Evelyn Hone College with Alex Nkazi in drawing and painting (2010-2012). In 2015 he was selected for the Asiko' Art School Residency in Mozambique, organised by Olabisi Silva. That same year, he attended the Insaka International Art Workshop Residency in Livingstone, Zambia. Makala is known for his versatility with materials manifesting in sculpture, painting, printmaking, digital art and performance. He considers his studio practice a research space where thoughts and ideas gather, resulting in his multimedia art. For Makala, the processes involved in production also allow for significant interrogation of themes such as identity politics, the black body and mapping. His works are part of the Lechwe Trust and Chaminuka Lodge Collections. He has participated in numerous exhibitions, residences and art fairs, such as the FNB Johannesburg Fair in 2019,Art Central. and The Congo Biennal 2022.
