Thato Mabaso, artistically known as Director P, is a self-taught photographer and aspiring Director of Photography. He is a 24 year-old South African born and bred in Kagiso, Johannesburg. Mabaso discovered his natural mode of expression through his photography and videography practice, which has only enhanced his true passion for art. His current focus is portraiture, videography and fashion photography.
Through his exploration of portraiture in particular, Mabaso has enjoyed opportunities to study the diverse characters he has encountered. He possesses an innate interest in the power of the face as a means to convey experiences, and so his practice seeks to capture interpretations of individuals through photography. Thato’s interest in fashion stems from the desire to represent characters through costume and styling, therefore inspiring new perspectives and confidence in those involved in his work.
Mabaso’s journey through the lens has allowed for him to carve a new path for himself, supporting the development of his work from independent township photography into the commercial industry. He has worked in the commercial industry for the past six years, but remains rooted in the township scene as co-founder of Kasi Vogue, a platform for townshipgroomed creatives to empower themselves by expressing the core of their everyday existence.
Recently, he has been working on collaborative projects which combine various disciplines such as photography, illustration, music and movement, while focusing specifically on developing his videography practice. Mabaso believes that, through his representation of characters and spaces, he can potentially provide alternative portrayals of South African narratives and culture.
