This painting belongs to a series of works titled Spoorloos, inspired by the vast and desolate Tankwa Karoo desert. It plays with the horizon line, the Karman line and the canon of the sublime in landscape painting. The body of work consists of various reinterpretations of landscape painting within the contemporary moment of imminent ecological collapse and humanity's rapid alienation from the rest of nature.
The work delves into the transformative force of emptiness and space the way it reminds us of our smallness and mortality. This painting captures that haunting beauty, drawing you in with its stark contrast and sublime detail, encouraging reflection on our fragility.
The ink I use is an artwork in itself, made from burnt plant oil by master ink artisans in China and Japan. Its water-based nature demands complete presence during creation, making every stroke a direct channelling of thought and energy. Each brushstroke is alive with immediacy, ensuring this piece is not just seen but felt.
