Andrew Salgado
Andrew Salgado (b. 1982) is a Canadian artist based in London, widely regarded as one of the United Kingdom's leading contemporary figurative painters. Since graduating with an MA in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art in 2009, Salgado has achieved remarkable international success, defined by a series of over 16 sold-out solo exhibitions in major art capitals including London, New York, Tokyo, Cape Town, and Basel.
Salgado's work is celebrated for its bold, gestural, and often large-scale approach to portraiture, exploring complex themes of identity, sexuality, and memory through a vibrant and aggressive use of colour and texture. In 2017, he became the youngest artist to be honoured with a survey exhibition at The Canadian High Commission in London, a testament to his significant impact on the contemporary art scene.
His rising prominence is further evidenced by extensive press coverage in publications like GQ, The Evening Standard, Artsy, and The Independent, as well as his strong performance in the secondary market. Since 2019, his works have consistently outperformed estimates at major auction houses, including Strauss & Co in South Africa and Phillips in New York.
A dedicated philanthropist, Salgado has raised over £135,000 for the Terrence Higgins Trust since 2014. His paintings are held in prestigious private and public collections worldwide, including the Oketa Collection, the Royal Bank of Canada Collection, the Government of Canada, and the collection of the Jordanian Royal Family.
