Tony Figueira

Tony Figueira

Tony Figueira (1959-2017) was a prominent and influential Namibian photographer of Angolan birth, celebrated for his powerful documentation of Namibian life, its landscape, and its path to independence.

Born in Huambo, Angola, Figueira moved to Windhoek, Namibia with his family at the age of seven. His passion for the camera was ignited as a teenager, a pursuit he formalized by studying journalism at Rhodes University in South Africa, graduating in 1984. This journalistic foundation would become a cornerstone of his narrative-driven photographic style.

Figueira’s extensive body of work captured the soul of his adopted nation through three distinct but interconnected lenses: the profound beauty and intricacy of the human experience; the critical pre- and post-independence struggle for freedom and justice in Namibia and its neighbours; and the vast, contrasting beauty of the Namibian landscape and its wildlife.

A key figure in Namibia’s photographic community, Figueira held his first solo exhibition, Minha Terra, at the National Art Gallery of Namibia in 1989. In 2004, he co-founded the influential Studio 77, which he ran until 2017. His award-winning work gained significant international acclaim, with exhibitions travelling from Namibia and South Africa to Angola, Portugal, and across Scandinavia.
