Walter Meyer

Walter Meyer

Celebrated for his compelling and evocative paintings, Carl Walter Meyer was one of South Africa's most significant landscape painters. His work, both melancholic and poetic, masterfully captures the softness of morning or evening light and the stark heat of the desert. Inspired by the beauty of remote places, he rendered the landscape as he observed it, creating a powerful body of work that also included portraits, still lifes, and sculpture.

Born in Aliwal North, Meyer studied at the University of Pretoria, graduating in 1984, before continuing his studies in Düsseldorf, Germany. Throughout his career, he won numerous prestigious awards, including first prizes from New Signatures and the South African Association of Artists (SAAA).

Meyer participated in solo and group exhibitions across South Africa, Europe, and the United States. A memorial exhibition, Tuisveld, was held at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in 2018 to honour his legacy. His work is represented in major private and public collections, including the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town. Walter Meyer passed away at his home in Upington in 2017.
