Siphesihle Ntsungwana
Siphesihle Ntsungwana is an Eastern Cape-born artist whose work explores his identity. Through painting, he explores the transition from the rural area of Bizana, Eastern Cape, to the urbanity of Durban and the transformation of his identity and art-making. Since moving to the city, his work references mass media and pop culture in an exploration of the youthful imaginings of a millennial, filtering contemporary imagery and social culture and opposing this to reality. These are filtered as in-depth studies of individuals seen in social culture and rendered in paintings of, at times, single color gradations of primary colours. Ntsungwana is a recent graduate of the Durban University of Technology and offers a fresh perspective on popular culture as it relates to the social diaspora of South African youth. His work has recently been featured at PRIZM Art Fair with the KZNSA Gallery (2021) and is enjoying rising favour with local and international collectors.
