Aïda Muluneh

Aïda Muluneh is a globally celebrated photographer and cultural entrepreneur whose work explores complex narratives of identity, history, and social justice through a distinctly vibrant and graphic lens. After an itinerant childhood in Yemen and England, she settled in Canada before graduating from Howard University in Washington D.C. with a degree in film. She began her career as a photojournalist for The Washington Post, a foundation that honed her powerful storytelling abilities.

Muluneh's art has been exhibited in leading institutions across the world, and her photographs are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art, and the RISD Museum, among others. A decorated artist, she is the recipient of the European Union Prize at the Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie (2007) and The Royal Photographic Society Curatorship Award (2020).A leading voice in global photography, Muluneh has served as a juror for the World Press Photo Contest and became the first Black woman to co-curate the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition in 2019. She is the founder and director of the Addis Foto Fest (AFF), the first international photography festival in East Africa. Through her company DESTA For Africa, she continues to curate exhibitions, foster education, and build cultural infrastructure from her base in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
