Lien Botha is one of the few South African artists to have experimented extensively with the photographic medium beyond its documentary frame. In addition to her lens based practice spanning 30 years, she has contributed to the visual arts; locally and internationally as curator and lecturer. She has held fifteen solo exhibitions to date and her work has been included in survey shows at various local and international venues including IZIKO South African National Gallery, Cape Town; Musee da Cidade, Lisbon;
Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; Te Papa Tongerewa Museum of New Zealand; Museum of Modern Art, Algiers; Musee National du Mali, Bamako; BOZAR, Brussels, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon and Art1:54, London.
Botha was awarded a Master of Arts with specialization in Creative Writing (University of Cape Town) in December 2014. Her first novel Wonderboom, published by Queillerie in June 2015, has received critical
acclaim amongst which the Jan Rabie Rapport-prize as well as the Eugène Marais prize. 2021 saw the release of her second novel Vin, which was accompanied by an on-site exhibition on her website: www.lienbotha.co.za
