Nicky Newman, 57, completed a Journalism and Media degree at Rhodes University as well as an honours in Psychology in the 1980s. She has had the privilege of attending the Maurits Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam and the Berlinale Talent Campus and, more recently, participating in the RMB Talent Unlocked mentorship programme in 2021.
Newman started making documentary films and has had a long and fertile career in this medium on camera and as an editor, producer and director. She also lectured at numerous educational institutions.
Looking for a quieter medium, Newman revived her love for stills photography and after being placed in various competitions and having her images published, she now sells fine art prints of her photography from galleries and shops in Cape Town.
She is currently working on a book on her series A Place of Water, featuring images from the Sea Point Pavilion public swimming pool.
