Rebaone Finger (b. 2001) is a multimedia sculpture artist born in Bloemfontein and raised in Pretoria and Johannesburg. A graduate of Michaelis, her incisive practice is deeply engaged with the multifaceted politics or being, exploring themes such as silent rage, rest, freedom, luxury, black consumerism, social media, food, politics, naming cultures, blackness, and black feminism.
Finger's work critiques societal dynamics by adopting the South African use of food as a naming culture, reflecting the experience of living between worlds of access and lack. Central to her artistic commentary is the concept of 'Cheese Girl', a distinctively South African term denoting class privilege and social distinction. Finger re-imagines "Cheese Girl" as an articulation of blackness as opulence, wealth, and luxury. Her sculptures actualize this notion by merging Instagram-inspired tropes and symbols of perceived opulence with images and objects that embody contrasting realities, capturing the term's fluid and inherently complex nature.
