Born in Kwa-Zulu Natal, in March 2003, Nkabinde Mpendulo is a Johannesburg-based artist working across various mediums to explore systemic and epistemic violence in contemporary civilization. Nkabinde approaches this concept by looking at how institutionalized education and industrialization undermine relationships between humans, land, and language in the form of urbanization. In this way, Nkabinde comments on the remnants of Western oppressive powers over the “primitive nations” or the “Other”.
Nkabinde completed his primary and secondary education in rural Kwa-Zulu Natal and began his tertiary education at BAT Center. He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from the University of Johannesburg, obtained in 2024. Nkabinde participated in various group shows, including a painting exhibition in Fox Wood House in JHB in 2022; a printmaking show with the Pretoria Association of Art in 2023; the UJ Visual Art 3rd year grad show, and the UJ FADA show at the University of Johannesburg in 2024.
