Maphoso George Mokwena is an emerging visual artist born in 1997 in Lephalale, Limpopo Province, South Africa. He graduated from Tielelo Secondary School in 2017 and was awarded a full bursary to study art by Elegant Fuel in 2020. In 2021, he enrolled at the Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg to study printmaking.
Mokwena’s body of work is deeply influenced by his journey between Lephalale & Johannesburg and make people to rethink how we measure worth by honouring both economic struggle and personal triumph rooted in family and resilience.
He works with various media, including pen, charcoal, acrylic, digital and oil paint. Mokwena has participated in numerous group exhibitions and was featured in publications such as Art Times, Hyper Blog Magazine and Ntshabele Newspaper. In 2024, Mokwena travelled to Italy to paint 90metre long community memorial mural, in 2025 he completed internship in printmaking at Artist Proof Studio and practice as an artist and printmaker.
