Artist Ompatile Sebuelo

Ompatile Sebuelo —b.1979 in Mmankgodi, Botswana—, is an accomplished ceramic sculptor and visual arts educator known for his fusion of traditional Botswana crafts with contemporary, thought-provoking themes. He uses clay from his home village Mmankgodi' also known as Mankgodi clay. He holds a Fine Arts degree from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Sebuelo’s ceramics transcend functionality, embodying rhythm and vitality that invite deeper connections to culture and heritage. As a high school visual arts teacher, he nurtures the next generation of artists while actively contributing to the arts community. He is a founding member of the Okavango Artists Association and has served as Board Chair (2012–2018) and Board Member (2018–2022) of the Nhabe Museum Trust in Maun, Botswana.

His work has been widely exhibited in Botswana, including solo and group shows at the Nhabe Museum, the Botswana National Museum, The Space Botswana Art Gallery and the Thapong Visual Arts Centre. Notably, he won Thapong Artist of the Year (2013) and has received multiple Presidential Awards for ceramics. Sebuelo continues to push artistic boundaries through exhibitions, community projects, and workshops, reinforcing his belief that art is a bridge between cultures and a force for societal transformation.
